SMARTservices is a product developed by BIU in recognition of the major changes which will affect all companies due to new legislation which becomes effective in the energy market from April 2019 and brings together a multitude of mandatory and voluntary legislation.

BIU SMARTservices allows an organisation to go beyond compliance and benefit from real commercial implementation opportunities which the latest legislation from BEIS is designed to encourage. The product is built around a three year agreement and recognises that for a customer with a complex energy position a quick fix strategy is neither realistic nor possible and can only be achieved with a true working partnership. A three year agreement allows BIU to invest in our customers, to correctly scope the project and to agree the deliverables with all stakeholders in the customer’s business. BIU SMARTservices are designed to protect our customers from the legal implications of non-compliance with statutory legislation. As well as managing compliance in our 21 years of experience we have never found a site which is not wasting energy. To its credit the new legislation from the department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is intended to encourage energy efficiency so that increases in the Climate Change Levy (CCL) will be fiscally neutral.

BIU SMARTservices allows a company to go further than a neutral position and to realise real savings together with 100% compliance. The product is always personalised to the customer in consideration of both the energy requirements, the complexity of the business, the number of sites and the approach to the share of implemented savings by the customer, against realistic and sometimes ambitious targets. BIU are very proud of the fact that over 500 ESOS Phase 1 Compliance Audits completed for our customers achieved 100% first time acceptance with no remedial actions. An important additional and unique feature of BIU SMARTservices is the BIU Reactive Energy Management Team which allows BIU to send its own trained personnel to the sites of our customers at no upfront cost to the customer with savings being shared between BIU and the customer. SMARTcontrols Where a customer has an existing BEMS (or is looking to invest) our REM’s interrogate and identify areas of high use. In conjunction with our automated SMARTalarms this allows BIU to pinpoint wasted energy. Our teams then make sure that any BEMS are operating and controlling sites to maximum efficiency. Where customers have an existing energy bureau for their BEMS system or an FM provider, our SMART teams work in parallel to ensure the systems are optimized.

SMARTstrategy Working with our customers BIU will develop an energy strategy which is appropriate and consistent with the commercial focus of the business. ESOS for example, is mandatory legislation with clear objectives to reduce energy consumption, develop a continuous improvement plan and implement projects that reduce consumption. The BIU SMARTstrategy provides our customers with a clear three year plan with a focus on managing risk and implementing opportunities.

SMARTdelivery Having agreed the energy strategy with the customer BIU works to implement this prioritising where the greatest savings exist or the risk of non-compliance is greatest. BIU assess our clients energy stack, the potential for entering into energy performance contracts for implementation of projects. SMARTdelivery is a core BIU skill managed by our team of highly experienced and qualified engineers. SMARTtraining This is where BIU personnel work at the customer’s premises to ensure the agreed strategy is implemented and identified savings are realised with no up-front cost to the customer. Our REM teams operate in the field and through analysing our customer’s data focus on implementing savings at underperforming sites and deliver behaviour change at the sites they visit. BIU call this Training as a Service (TaaS) which is the most effective solution delivered right at the heart of the opportunity, to the right people, by the right people. Again, BIU see this as delivering real value in a true energy partnership.

Tracking BIU SMARTservices success BIU recognise that large complex organisations are constantly changing to react to commercial opportunities, competitor activity and changing consumer dynamics. The consequence of this is that an energy policy must evolve and change to deliver the commercial advantage for the business. A fundamental part of the BIU SMARTservices product is that it is continually progressing and tracking actual drops in consumption against implemented projects. BIU SMARTservices is a true partnership of energy management and legislative compliance. We use our BIU247 platform to monitor, report and track success.

SMARTprocess The first stage of the BIU SMARTservices process is to scope the preferred route and boundaries for compliance. We call this stage the assessment of a customers risks and opportunities. We will model options with associated costs and benefits to help customers choose the compliance route which works in the best commercial interests of their business. According to the decisions made at this stage we are then able to determine the scope of the BIU SMARTstrategy. The scope of compliance then determines the support which an organisation needs across the three years and which BIU will provide so as to become an extension of our customers energy management team – a true partnership which ensures compliance and delivers results.
