Accrington on Rails - The Tramways: A Complete History - Robert Kenyon

CHAPTER 12

ACCRINGTON DERAILED 1933 January The Borough Engineer reported, he had now received notification from the County Surveyor that he could proceed with the reinstatement of the road surface following the removal of the tramway tracks on Blackburn Road, Peel Street and Whalley Road and with the exception of those along Burnley Road, remove the remaining tram rails and then resurface the roads and that this work should be done immediately. He had already started work on Peel Street, and that he was obtaining tenders for the Asphalt surfacing of this street and Blackburn Road. It was resolved to approve his actions, and that the Chairman, Vice-Chair and Town Clerk would assist him in choosing the most economic tender for carrying out this work. Accordingly he had received tenders for the purchase of the rails, points, crossings, fishplates, nuts, bolts and copper bonds. After consultations with the Chairman and General Manager, he had accepted the one from Messrs Thomas W. Ward Ltd, of Sheffield. February It was resolved the General Manager could pass over the Tower Wagon to the Watch, Public Lighting and Fire Brigade Committee for their use. May The Transport manager then referred to the case of J. J. Bruce, a motorman in the Tramway Department, who had been injured several years previously, since which he had received workmen’s compensation. He had now reached the age of 65 and was therefore entitled to be put on the superannuation list. This matter was passed on to the Town Clerk for him to deal with. TRAMWAY UNDERTAKING YEAR 1932/33 INCOME ITEM COST Balance brought £4,63
