The Tramway Manager produced a list of calls and miles operated by the Tramway Department’s Motor Ambulance, over the period which they had responsible for operating since October 1915. Year # of callouts Miles operated 1915/16 174 1,540 1916/17 181 1,206 1917/18 (October to January 1 st ) 94 729 TOTAL (from Oct 1915 to March 20 th , 1918) 449 3,475 May The Electricity & Tramways Committee met where the Borough Treasurer and the Tramway Manager reported they had attended a conference of the Municipalities called by the Chairmen and Managers of the Manchester and Glasgow tramway systems, to discuss the pending application from the National Transport Workers’ Federation for a 12½% bonus to ‘various’ classes of tramway employees, where they formally appointed a small executive group to act on behalf of all the authorities in the proceedings which would be instituted by this application. The following resolutions were passed - 1. That the Executive Council of the Municipal Tramways Association, with the addition of one representative from each area, (as defined by the Board of Trade), would be requested to deal with any demands made nationally for a 12½% bonus. This Executive Council to have the powers of negotiation or to appear at any arbitration, there to represent the best interests of the municipal tramway owners and operators, and to recommend to them any settlement which they thought acceptable. 2. That in view of the urgent necessity of having a National Organisation set up to protect the interests of the tramway industry, this conference urges the Executive Council of the Municipal Tramways Association, to take the whole question into consideration without further delay. It was resolved the Town Clerk should intimate to the Secretary of this conference that Accrington was strongly opposed to granting this bonus. It was also resolved that Accrington should join the suggested Council now in the process of being formed. June At a meeting of the Electricity & Tramways Committee, the Borough Surveyor recommended that the tender from the Equipment & Engineering Company of £76 – 17s – 3d for a ‘Celerity Rail Grinder’ should be accepted, as indeed it was. This would eliminate the need to bring in outside contractors to carry out this kind of work. The Committee considered a communication from the Board of Trade calling their attention to the importance of achieving the maximum economy in coal consumption by cutting the number of stopping places on the Accrington system, thus reducing the amount of electricity consumed. However, the ‘compulsory’ stopping places fixed by the Board of Trade were not to be changed. Following consideration the Committee agreed to recommend the adoption of a ‘few’ alterations as follows - BAXENDEN SECTION Stops to be removed Relocated to
