FURNITURE OCCUPATIONS
The Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors industry is of significant importance to the UK economy, particularly in the supply of end products for residential and commercial living and work places. It offers a vast range of career opportunities for those with an eye for detail and a creative mind. Furniture Manufacturers must be dexterous, have a good work ethic and be able to demonstrate their ability to work individually and as part of a team.
The furniture industry provides numerous opportunities and various job roles including the design, making, finishing or restoration of furniture. You may specialise in for example: manufacturing a range of different pieces of furniture; upholstering chairs and sofas using traditional and modern materials and fabrics; installing fitted furniture such as bespoke wardrobes and kitchens; restoring antique and modern furniture by using practical and scientific restoration
techniques; and using computer numerical control (CNC) machinery to cut, plane and sand all types of wood. You will develop a range of practical skills, as most tasks require the use of various hand and power tools, and may also develop your artistic and computer skills. The specific skills you develop will depend on the area you specialise in.
