THE STEAM TRAMWAY – 1891 to 1899 1891 (Many of the disputes with the Corporation, which had begun soon after the Steam Tramway Company had commenced running continued on into 1891. It was also the year in which a neighbouring tramway system made moves to pre-empt Accrington by extending its lines into Oswaldtwistle.) February A letter from the Tramway Company ( dated February 4 th ) was presented to the Committee, asking for facilities to enable their engines to reverse around their trailer cars at the Church terminus. They requested the Corporation to arrange for construction of a passing loop, or a triangle of lines at the junction of Blackburn Road with Ernest Street. It was resolved the Town Clerk should give ‘every assistance’ to the Tramway Company and to take whatever steps he thought necessary to initiate the
