Accrington on Rails - The Tramways: A Complete History - Robert Kenyon

General Initially tickets were printed with the days of the week in a column, but when it was discovered that this system was open to misuse, as the tickets could be reused over an unspecified period instead of the day of issue, code letters were introduced. These codes were A , L , O , R , T , W & X , and conductors were instructed on a random basis each day, as to which of these letters was to be punched. This illuminated the problem, as it was unlikely that the passenger would know which letter would be next in use on any particular day. WORKPEOPLE’S TICKETS Fares were based on half of the single fare and the single fare for a return journey, (1907 – 1917).
