Accrington on Rails - The Tramways: A Complete History - Robert Kenyon
At a meeting of the Transport Committee, it was resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Sub-Committee at their meetings. A letter was received from Church UDC expressing regret that they had no powers to enter into an agreement with Accrington Corporation on the subject of legless ex servicemen resident in Church for free travel on the trams and omnibuses to the Infirmary or other hospitals, or to or from any other location outside the Borough. Following receipt of correspondence on the subject of the charges levied for the use of the Motor Ambulance, it was resolved that the following reductions would be made – (1) For all residents of the Borough to Blackburn Infirmary and paid for by the St. John Ambulance Association from 1 shilling down to 9 pence. (2) For all residents of the Borough to Manchester Infirmary or ‘other’ hospitals, or to and from any other location outside the Borough, and paid for by the St. John Ambulance Association from 1 shilling down to 9 pence. These recommendations were approved and adopted. In accordance with the Local Government & Other Officers Superannuation Act 1922, and at the behest of the Finance Committee, the Tramway Manager submitted a list of the 220 posts in the Transport Department who would qualify under the terms of this Act. Following this the Borough Treasurer submitted the following statements of account for the Tramway undertaking for the year ending March 31 st , 1931 -
