Accrington on Rails - The Tramways: A Complete History - Robert Kenyon

Chair, with the Town Clerk and the Tramway Manager were instructed to make enquiries into the circumstances of the deceased’s children. September At a meeting of the Tramways-Sub-Committee, a report was received on the circumstances of the two orphans of the late Mr Marshall. He had provided them with a home. It was resolved to recommend that a weekly sum of £1 should be donated by the Council towards the upkeep of these children. The Tramway Manager then reported that the two boilers installed at the Ellison Street depot to provide heating were both in need of renewal. He had already received estimates from Messrs J. & T. Livesey for the installation of two replacement boilers at an all-inclusive sum of £218. It was resolved to accept this tender and permission was given for the work to begin. The Electrical & Tramways Committee met and the Town Clerk reported he had received a letter from the Ministry of Transport, reminding the Corporation that the Accrington Corporation Tramways (Temporary Increase of Charges) Order 1926 would cease to have effect from December 31 st next. It asked whether the Corporation intended to apply for a further extension and if so, a formal application should be made before October 15 th , and that this should be accompanied by the data and details of all previous applications. It was resolved that in view of the increasing costs of working the tramway along with maintenance and renewals, in comparison with the time when the fares and charges were originally limited, it was essential that the existing order be renewed again. So the Council would be recommended to make an application to the Ministry of Transport for an extension to the present Order forthwith. October The Electrical & Tramways Committee met, to consider the question raised relative to the effect of the existing instructions governing the return journeys of passengers taking return tickets and travelling between Accrington and Blackburn. It was resolved that these passengers should be permitted to travel on any car travelling in either direction to both destinations, whether or not the same car runs through. At a meeting of the Town Council it was resolved that the minute of the Electricity & Tramways Committee would be amended by the Chairman, with the permission of the Council, in relation to the subject of return tickets pending the completion of the new working arrangements with Blackburn Corporation Tramways. November The Electrical & Tramways Committee met, when it was resolved that the following members should be nominated to act as a Tramway Sub-Committee, to deal with matters connected with the tramway, namely – The Chairman (Alderman Higham), the Vice-Chair (Councillor Watson), plus Councillors Constantine, Ellis, O’Connor, Tasker, Wade and Woolley. December At a meeting of this Tramways-Sub-Committee they considered the question of providing shelters at the Huncoat terminus of the tramway and at a location along Whalley Road and it was resolved A. A wooden shelter would be erected at the Hillock Vale terminus, subject to a suitable site being identified. B. The Chairman, Vice-Chair and Tramway Manager should approach the owner of Whalley House with a view to obtaining permission for the construction of a shelter against his wall, abutting upon the property on the Whalley Road side.
