It was resolved that the Town Clerk would reply that this Sub Committee did not believe that any good would materialise from such a meeting so declined the offer. The Tramway Manager then submitted a tender for the supply of mackintoshes for the motormen and conductors. The one at £1 - 19s – 0d each from the Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Company Ltd, it was resolved would be the one to accept. Finally, the Tramway Manager was authorised to remove a ‘request stop’ on the Baxenden Section. February The Tramways Committee met to examine a minute from the Sub-Committee, with regard to a letter which the Town Clerk had received from the ‘local’ Secretary of the T&GWU requesting a meeting. It was resolved the Town Clerk would reply that this matter was receiving ‘sympathetic consideration’! March At a meeting of the Tramways Sub-Committee, the Tramway Manager submitted an application from the Chief Inspector, Edwin E. Challoner, for an increase in salary. His present remuneration was £4 – 13s – 2d per week. The Tramway Manager recommended that on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays commencing on April 8 th , the Clayton-le-Moors Section should be augmented to run at a 10-minute frequency after 16:30 instead of every 12- minutes as at present. He then submitted statistical information showing the mileage now being run by the existing fleet of cars over full range of routes. In the light of this it was resolved - 1. To recommend to the Full Council that 2 additional double-deck, closed top tramcars should be purchased. 2. That the tender received from the Brush Electrical Engineering Company in Loughborough should be recommended for acceptance. 3. That the Council be recommended to make an application to the Ministry of Transport for permission to borrow the sum of £2,250, which was the amount required to complete the purchase. May The General Purposes Committee met and the Tramway Manager reported that the entire Tramway service operated by Accrington Corporation had been suspended since the previous day (Tuesday, May 4 th ) owing to the General Strike. It was resolved the Tramway Sub-Committee should be authorised to resume a ‘limited’ or even a full service of trams if and when possible. The Tramway Manager reported to a meeting of the Tramways Sub-Committee, on the circumstances now being caused by the General Strike, and requesting instructions as to what services might be possible under these circumstances.
