Accrington on Rails - The Tramways: A Complete History - Robert Kenyon
to Railway Road half way along. Accrington’s cars entered the Boulevard and terminated in long, straight loop running towards the railway station in front of the buildings. Departure was straight along Railway Road to the corner with Church Street where on approach the line singled until it went right around the corner into Salford. From here it re-entered the double section which saw it climb to the place where the inward bound line had branched off, and then followed the same route back to Accrington. The route distance was almost exactly 5 miles with the milepost opposite Windsor Road showing 3 miles to Accrington and 2 from Blackburn. Accrington closed the service as far as Market Street Church on August 26 th , 1931 , after which through passengers between the towns had to change from trams to buses. In September 1948 , there were two accidents on the section passing through West End involving Blackburn’s trams. On Saturday the 25 th , car number 67 was in collision with a motor coach of the East Yorkshire Motor Services in which it sustained damage to its upper deck. It was taken back to Intack Depot where, due to the imminent closure of the system, it was scrapped. Two days later a petrol tanker was involved in an accident with another tramcar, but this was only a minor bump. There were no casualties in either of these incidents. ( Accrington abandoned its trams in 1932, but Blackburn continued to operate them for a further sixteen years. The route to Accrington was the same except in Church the line was stopped, and a new terminus was created in front of the Commercial Hotel public house. This service lasted until January 17 th , 1949, when Blackburn gave up tramway operations beyond Intack to Church .) Fleet List – Steam Engines No .
