TOTAL £43,076 At a meeting of the General Works Committee, the Tramway Manager put forward a suggestion that barriers should be erected on Peel Street for the purpose of forming ‘orderly’ queues of passengers at busy times. The Committee however rejected this suggestion. June The Electricity & Tramways Committee met, and the Tramway Manager submitted statistics which showed that additional tramcars were ‘urgently’ needed. After consideration it was resolved that 2 double deck and 2 single-deck bogie cars could be purchased. It was decided that an application would be made to the Board of Trade for permission to borrow the money in order to finance these new trams. The Borough Treasurer then submitted the following statistics for the Tramway Department - Total wages paid to June 18 th , 1919 = £5,179 – 14s – 6d. Total wages paid to June 18 th , 1918 = £3,333 – 11s – 2d. An increase in the Financial Year of = £1,846 – 3s – 4d. The increase in traffic receipts in the current Financial Year over the corresponding period in 1918 = £2,620 – 8s – 11d. July The Electricity & Tramways Committee met and resolved that as part of the National Peace Celebrations and in accord with the Municipal Tramways Association, all employees working on July 19 th would be paid at double time for that day plus an extra day would be added to the annual holidays also with full pay. It was then resolved that Tramway Manager could dispose of a quantity of uniforms that had been worn by the female members of staff in his department. It was further resolved that he could also obtain new sand drying apparatus for the Ellison Street depot. August At a meeting of the Electricity & Tramways Committee, the Tramway Manager reported on the passing of motorman Crabtree, who had been very seriously injured in the execution of his duties over three years previously. It was resolved the Chairman and Vice-Chair should look into the circumstances of his family, with the authority to grant such compensation to his widow as they felt proper. The following letter was received from the General Secretary of the Municipal Tramways Association, enclosing a copy of the correspondence between his Association and the National Transport Workers’ Federation with regard to an application for an increase in wages plus additional concessions. It was resolved that the actions of the General Secretary of the Municipal Tramways Association be approved. Municipal Tramways Association (Incorporated).
