Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Testing

Overview Every year 12,000 lung disease deaths are estimated to be linked to past exposures at work*. This has led to more stringent guidelines and statutory requirements regarding the testing of LEV equipment used to remove dust or fumes from the working environment. This includes oil mist, welding fume, smoke and dust extraction units.

LEV testing is regulated by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) and comes under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Law. It must be undertaken by a competent specialist every 14 months, or in some cases, monthly or bi-annually (Details regarding LEV regulations can be found by visiting the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/lev). Face Fit Testing for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

Overview Where RPE is required in the workplace, it must provide individual protection for the wearer to avoid respiratory problems caused by harmful airborne substances. Face fit testing for RPE is a legal requirement* in the UK for anyone who wears a tight, or close fitting, mask for work. It is a means of checking that a respirator facepiece matches a person's facial features and seals adequately to their face, providing both comfort and protection.

Face fit testing should be carried out: • As part of initial mask selection processes.

• At least annually to ensure RPE continues to provide the correct fit. • Every time a new model, manufacturer type/brand, or size of RPE is introduced to the wearer. • If alterations occur to a wearer’s weight or facial/dental features.

NLTG’s Health & Safety Specialists have years of experience in undertaking thorough RPE face fit tests and our services are available for the following RPE mask types: • Disposable half masks. • Reusable filter or cartridge half masks. • Powered respirators. • Full face filter or cartridge masks. • Escape set masks. • Full breathing apparatus masks.

Dust Sampling

Overview Safeguarding personnel against the health risks posed by wood dust is critical. Small particles released during woodworking processes can cause damage and scarring to lung tissue, leading to serious health issues including lung cancer, silicosis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

Exposure to some chemicals such as glues, resins and other wood treatments, can also increase health risks. NLTG’s Health & Safety Specialists have years of experience in undertaking comprehensive dust sampling assessments in line with regulatory requirements.

Our dust sampling service includes: • The collection of wood dust samples to determine whether dust levels meet the required guidance ranges and legislation. • Production of a comprehensive report, and where necessary, details of appropriate actions to prevent, limit or manage dust releases.

Noise Assessments

Overview Exposure to high levels of noise at work can cause permanent and incurable hearing loss.

Employers must therefore ensure suitable protection for employees from excessive noise.

A noise assessment is a requirement of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 for anyone exposed to high or sustained noise in a workplace, and supports employers to fulfil their responsibilities to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). It will support the identification of risks noise could pose to employees, and the appropriate actions to reduce noise when risks are found.

NLTG’s Health & Safety Specialists have years of experience in undertaking thorough noise risk assessments in line with regulatory requirements.

Our risk assessment service includes: • Completion of a detailed assessment of noise

levels and the risks noise could pose to employees, comparing noise exposure levels to the Action Levels stipulated in the HSE Noise Regulations. • Production of a detailed report, and

where necessary, identification of appropriate actions to reduce noise exposure, such as the provision of hearing protection.
