ighty oaks from lile acorns grow; and when LawrenceWhiaker became CEO ofWarrantywise . . . the 23-year-old branched out as the UK’s leading supplier of warranties. The ever-blossoming business – providing ongoing car cover when a manufacturer’s warranty expires – was already a soaraway success in its home county of Lancashire. But under the entrepreneurial eye of Lawrence, this Hyndburn-based business is now one of Britain’s biggest warranty companies, writing more than 50,000 plans per year. Warrantywise understand that feeling of dread when your car needs a repair, as a huge repair bill can really throw a proverbial spanner in the works. So the deal could not be more simple or transparent. You make sure your car is serviced correctly and has no known faults when you take out the cover, and Warrantywise will pay for any subsequent faults covered by the warranty. Also covering you if: A part stops working and requires immediate repair or replacement before it will work again. That part simply isn’t working properly (aer 30 days or 1,000 miles and up to 10 years old or 100,000 miles) and is likely to break down before the expiry of your plan. “Here atWarrantywise we provide the fairest of warranties,” says Lawrence. Their ethos is simple – help people become wise about warranties – busting wide open the industry’s tendency to hide behind complicated terms and conditions. Nowwith almost ten years of expertise under his belt, Lawrence adds: “When I became CEO, some people thought I was too young for the job. But the truth is I had worked in the family business since I was in single digits.” “I accompanied my father to his office every weekend and during the holidays and I learnt the business from dad and Andrea Cross, then an 18-year-old office junior, and nowmy most senior member of staff atWarrantywise.” “Andrea taught me all the basic skills needed from talking on the phone to making up prospectuses for potential new customers. Over the years I gained invaluable experience frommy mother and father about business. They didn’t keep anything fromme; they shared the triumphs as well as the failings, which I believe has stood me in good stead to runWarrantywise today.” Now a multi-million pound organisation, the company provides warranty services to many of the country’s largest main dealer groups, which include makes such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari and Porsche. All senior partners are Fellows of the Motor Industry and have operated used car warranties for over 20 years.
Campaigning motoring journalist backs Warrantywise Quentin Willson is one of Britain’s best known authorities on standards in the motoring industry. He spent more than a decade presenting BBC’s Top Gear and was largely responsible for bringing down the once scandalously high prices of new cars in the UK to match the rest of Europe. Quentin introduced the J.D Power Car Satisfaction Survey to the UK and is a patron of the British Standards Institute Kitemark Good Garage Scheme. He’s the only motoring journalist in the world to have teamed up with a warranty company to design a used car warranty. He says: “I’ve spent the last six years personally refining, tweaking and polishing this warranty to make sure that it offers the highest level of service and protection possible. I’m so confident that Warrantywise is the market leader, that unlike some other warranty companies, I’m prepared to say in writing that this is now the best warranty cover that money can buy.”
