Stickingwith the sweet themewe visit Stockley’s Sweet Shop, a taste-bud tingling trip back toVictorian times.The confectionery has beenmade the traditional way since 1918 and time has only improved those recipes. It was fromhumble beginnings in a shed in High Street, Rileys Hill that the name of Stockley’s first became recognised as quality sweet manufacturers. Prepare to be catapulted back to a timewhen pineapple chunks, pear drops and rainbow crystals were a weekly treat for your pennies. Just a few steps away you will find the HungryTackler restaurant and cabaret venue run by LouiseMcNamee and her husband Chris, an excellent chef and lover of home- cooked food. Previously awardedTaste Lancashire Quality Assured status,The Hungry Tackler is dedicated to using fresh, local produce& freshly bake on-site everymorning all their Pies, Cakes &Pastries.The couple, alongwith sister in lawDebbie, run both the HungryTackler and sister venueThe Pavilion Coffee Shop.The Pavilion is oen the first port of call for customers visiting theMill, located at the front entrance, secluded from the hustle and bustle of shopping.The restaurant offers an extensive selection of homemade daily specials such as fish& chips and steak pudding as well as lighter snacks, sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Back at the HungryTackler, almost 3,000 people book their cabaret dining experience during peak six week holidays. Guests enjoy great home-cooked food, top-notch entertainment and cabaret shows with a variety of guest performers. Says Louise: “We get pre-booked coach parties coming fromall over the UK. Scotland and Ireland, some come for the day, others are part of a coach tour. We can comfortably seat 150 and customers can book thewhole place out for a show fromMonday to Fridays.” A lively line up of entertainment ismixedwith shopping and dining. Says Louise: “We had a group in from Japan today and they tried all sorts including stroganoffpiewith amash potato topping, chicken andmushroompiewith a pastry lid and a cheese onion and sausage and baked bean pasty.They also enjoyed the homemade lasagna which we are famous for.” With a bakery on site, more than 200 freshly baked scones are soldeach daywith a choice of fruit and cherry or almond scones servedwith fresh cream, buer and jam. Adds Louise: “All recipes havebeen createdby the family over the 16yearswe havebeen here.” Moving through the store to the Italian-inspired Café Nova, owned by theMassarella Group (alongwith theTerracedTea Room), we findUrsula Harczukwho has been serving hungry shoppers for more than five years.Whenwe pop in, asparagus and chilli linguini is the special of the day served alongside a large range of Paninis. A selection of Italian coffees is available and servedwith patisseries sent overnight fresh froman Italian bakery in London. Over in the Home, Garden and Lifestyle section is theTerracedTea room. Quintessentially English andwith an impressive array of loose leaf teas and freshly baked cakes, this heritage blue tea room– designed in house - provides an oasis of calm from the frenzy of shopping. Assistant manager Rachel Grace says: “Our vintage English tea room is somewhere to enjoy amoment of calm.We serve freshly baked cakes, speciality teas and coffees.Wemake everything fresh here. As well as the baked goods and pastries we serve savoury treats such asmushroom tartlets, rarebit and hot sandwiches.”
