#AmazingAccrington Futures Event

Sara and Miles helped launch our important event, as we aim to inspire our next generation in their future careers

Introduction #AmazingAccrington, a group of business leaders from private and public sectors in Hyndburn, has been working hard to ensure young people have as much information and inspiration as possible when making their choices on the next steps after leaving our schools. Careers in software development, cyber security, and high tech manufacturing are among some that you might not think were in great need locally – but vacancies are currently open and in high demand. We have been running a programme of taking businesses into local schools with our MP, to showcase what they do. Have a look at the back cover to see some examples! We’ve had great success in inspiring the young people to take up careers locally. We launched a new area of the #AmazingAccrington website for Opportunities, showcasing pathways including education, training, apprenticeships and employment. This can be found here: opportunities.amazingaccrington.co.uk We held an Education Summit, bringing together Headteachers and Careers Leads from our Hyndburn schools, to hear from business leaders and inspirational speakers including Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Director of Public Health.

We asked how we could improve outcomes for young people in Hyndburn, and what we, as business leaders, could do to help them in their future career choices. We want to give our young people every opportunity possible, right here in Hyndburn – whether they choose employment, education or training as their next step. It was suggested by a Headteacher and Careers Adviser that a Futures Event all under one roof, where all our Year 11s can come and see the wealth of opportunity in Hyndburn, would be extremely beneficial. And today, we have delivered just that. Exhibitors from local businesses, Higher Education establishments, training providers, Armed Forces, Emergency Services, and Tech sectors are represented. Employers such as the Police and the Army will join local companies such as Studio Retail Ltd and Emerson and Renwick in showcasing their many and varied career paths. Many thanks to all of those who have helped make this happen. There are no ceilings on what job prospects can be delivered in the borough.

I’m really pleased we can bring together our local businesses and schools in a meaningful way, to encourage future career choices for our young people. I’ve been into the schools myself and told my story of how I became the youngest serving Conservative MP. I know that great things can come from Hyndburn, and I look forward to seeing our next generation flourish here.

We have some fantastic businesses, world class companies based right here in Hyndburn. I’m delighted we can bring year 11 students here to see the brilliant careers they can have locally, and inspire them on their future career paths, whether they choose employment, education or training as their next step. This initiative will be very worthwhile and I thank all the participants for making this happen.
